Professor at Monash University - Melbourne (Australia)

Chris Greening is dedicated to using microbiology to improve health and sustainability. Following a first-class degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford (2010), Chris completed a doctorate at the University of Otago (2014) investigating the physiological roles of the hydrogenases in mycobacteria, before gaining postdoctoral experience at CSIRO.
In 2016, he formed an independent group at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia dedicated to understanding the microbiology of greenhouse gas cycling: from enzymes to ecosystems.
He has published over 125 publications mostly in top journals, received multiple independent fellowships, and partnered extensively with large-scale intervention programs and diverse industrial organisations. For example, he has extensively partnered with the agricultural sector to understand and mitigate methane emissions from ruminants, with a focus on redirecting hydrogen flow.
Professor Greening received the Fenner Medal from the Australian Academy of Science (2022) and the Prime Minister’s Prize for Life Scientist of the Year (2023).
